National Jackie Robinson Breaking Barriers Winner

Peter Hanhan

Breaking Barriers: In Sports, In Life is a baseball themed program that gives kids strategies to overcome obstacles in their lives developed by Major League Baseball and Scholastic Inc.

Using America's sport, baseball, as the metaphor for life, the curriculum is based on the values demonstrated by barrier breaker, Jackie Robinson: Determination, Commitment, Persistence, Integrity, Justice, Courage, Teamwork, Citizenship, and Excellence.

A major component of the program is the Breaking Barriers Essay Contest, which encourages children to write about barriers or obstacles they have faced or are still facing in their lives and how they used the values exemplified by Jackie Robinson to deal with those barriers or obstacles.

Peter Hanhan, a 9th grade student from Bloomingdale High School in Valrico, FL. Peter's essay highlighted courage, one of Jackie Robinson's core values, and was chosen as one of 10 finalists from thousands of essays nationwide.

Peter was recognized for his accomplishments prior to a game at Tropicana Field and was accompanied by Jackie Robinson's daughter, Sharon Robinson.
