Jamey Wright held the high-powered Red Sox to two runs in five-plus innings, but he took the tough-luck loss in the opener in Boston. Kenny Lofton went 4-for-4 and stole four bases, but Texas left 11 men on base, including Lofton on second in the ninth inning.
Tim Wakefield allowed seven hits and four walks, but held Texas to just one run in 6 2/3 frames. Boston produced just enough to back Wakefield, with Wily Mo Pena's RBI single in the fourth and Manny Ramirez's grounder in the fifth accounting for its lone runs.
