The Texas Rangers today announced that right-handed pitcher Colby Lewis has agreed to terms on a 2014 minor league contract with an invitation to major league spring training camp. Financial terms were not disclosed, per club policy. Lewis became a free agent at the end of the 2013 season.
Lewis, 34, spent the entire 2013 season on the disabled list and overall was 0-1, 7.00 (14 ER/18.0 IP) in 5 starts at Double-A Frisco and 0-1, 9.00 (6 ER/6.0 IP) in 2 starts at Triple-A Round Rock, all on rehab assignment. He began the year on the 15-day disabled list in the Arizona extended spring program continuing to rehab from surgery on July 27, 2012 to repair a torn flexor tendon in his right elbow.
The right-hander was sent to Round Rock on rehab assignment and started on May 9 vs. Las Vegas (3 ER/2.0 IP, ND). He experienced soreness in the triceps and was removed from rehab on May 13. Lewis returned to rehab assignment and made one start each at Frisco and Round Rock before soreness in his right elbow forced his return to the DL.
Lewis was transferred to the 60-day DL on June 6, then made four rehab starts for Frisco between July 17 and August 3, going 0-1, 6.89 (12 ER/15.2 IP). His last outing was a no decision on August 3 vs. San Antonio (2 ER/5.0 IP)
Lewis underwent season-ending right hip resurfacing surgery on August 22. He is currently undergoing a rehab program for his hip.
This will be Lewis' fifth consecutive season in the Rangers organization since re-signing with the club as a free agent in January 2010, and he is 32-29 in 80 starts in that span. He last pitched in a major league game on July 18, 2012 at Oakland. The right-hander is 44-44, 4.76 in 152 games/114 starts with Texas (2002-04; 2010-12), Detroit (2005-06), and Oakland (2007) in his big league career.
