Arlington, Texas - The Texas Rangers announced today that the club has received right-handed pitcher Shawn Tolleson from the Los Angeles Dodgers on a waiver claim. The team has also selected right-handed pitchers Lisalverto Bonilla and Ben Rowen, along with infielder Luis Sardinas, to the major league roster. Additionally, left-handed pitcher Edwar Cabrera has cleared waivers and been assigned outright to the minor leagues.
Tolleson, 25, has appeared for the Dodgers in each of the last two seasons, going a combined 3-1 with a 4.30 ERA (18 ER/37.2 IP) in 41 relief appearances. He had just 6 total appearances in 2013 due to lower back surgery and a left hip injury. He attended Allen (Texas) High School and pitched at Baylor University in Waco. Tolleson, who was originally selected by the Dodgers in the 30th round of the 2010 June draft, has a career 1.34 ERA (19 ER/127.2 IP) in 107 appearances in the minor leagues. He also has a .932 career WHIP figure in the minors with 185 strikeouts against 31 walks.
Rowen, 25, went 6-1 with a 0.69 ERA in 51 total appearances for Frisco (AA) and Round Rock (AAA) in 2013. Bonilla, 23, had a 7-5 record with 6 saves and a 4.79 ERA (39 ER/73.1 IP) in 47 games/2 starts for Frisco and Round Rock last season. He also tossed 5.0 shutout innings over 3 appearances with Surprise in the Arizona Fall League. Sardinas, 20, batted .288 (149-518) with 2 home runs, 46 RBI, 81 runs and 32 steals in 126 total games with Myrtle Beach (High-A) and Frisco in 2013. He also has a .354 (45-127) average in 31 games with La Guaira in the Venezuelan Winter League.
Cabrera, 26, was received from Colorado on a waiver claim on October 16, when he was transferred from the Rockies 60-day disabled list to the Rangers' 60-day disabled list. He was reinstated to the active roster on November 4. Cabrera did not pitch this past season due to a left shoulder injury that required surgery on July 10, 2013. He made 2 starts for the Rockies in 2012, his only major league action to date, and has just 8 career outings above the Double-A level.
With today's transactions, the Rangers now have 38 players on the club's 40-man roster.
