Rangers announce promotions and hirings in baseball operations
Scott Coolbaugh promoted to Hitting Coordinator and Brook Jacoby hired as Asst. Hitting Coordinator Longtime amateur scouts Mike Grouse and Jay Eddings join pro side among other changes

Arlington, Texas - The Texas Rangers announced several changes and additions to the club's baseball operations staff today. The club will announce the full player development staff at a later date. A list of today's transactions:
- Scott Coolbaugh promoted from Triple-A Hitting Coach to Hitting Coordinator
- Brook Jacoby hired as Assistant Hitting Coordinator
- James Keller hired as Special Assistant to the General Manager
- Brian Williams hired as Southeast Regional Crosschecker
- Mike Grouse promoted to Pro Scout (formerly National Crosschecker)
- Jay Eddings promoted to Pro Scout (formerly Amateur Scout)
- Jake Krug promoted from Director, Minor League Operations to Special Assignment Crosschecker
- Bobby Crook promoted to Amateur Scout for N. Texas/Oklahoma/Arkansas(formerly Manager, Amateur Scouting)
- Mike Medici hired as Area Scout for Wisconsin/Illinois/Indiana/Kentucky
- Matt Klotsche promoted to Manager, Amateur Scouting
Last season was Coolbaugh's seventh in the Texas organization. He has served as a hitting instructor at several levels within the system, including time as the major league hitting coach from June 8, 2011 through the end of 2012. He has also been the hitting coach for Double-A Frisco (2007-08), Triple-A Oklahoma City (2009-10), and Triple-A Round Rock (2013).
Jacoby returns to the Texas organization after seven seasons as the major league hitting coach for the Cincinnati Reds. Under Jacoby, the Cincinnati offense produced the 2nd-highest on-base percentage and the 3rd-highest run total in the National League in 2013. Prior to joining the Reds in 2007, the two-time A.L. All-Star spent four seasons with Texas as a hitting coach for the Arizona League Rangers (2003-04) and then as minor league hitting coordinator (2005-06). Jacoby also filled in as the major league hitting coach in April and May of the 2006 season.
Keller most recently served as the Orioles national pitching crosschecker after having a role as a pro scout. He also worked as a scout and minor league pitching coach in the Arizona organization, and was a minor league pitching coach with Toronto. While with Baltimore, Keller signed right-handed pitcher David Hernandez.
Williams has been a Midwest area scout with the Mariners since 2004, and added additional duties as a crosschecker in Canada the past two years. Prior to joining the Seattle scouting staff, he worked as a baseball operations assistant and area scout for the Cubs from 2000-05. In his time as an area scout, Williams has signed four eventual major leaguers: left-handed pitcher Jerry Blevins, right-handed pitcher Nate Adcock, left-handed pitcher James Paxton, and right-handed pitcher Steve Delabar.
Grouse has been with the Rangers since 1988, and most recently served as a national crosschecker. He was originally selected by the Rangers in the 1984 June draft. Eddings has been an amateur scout with the Rangers since 1998.
Krug will be in his 12th season with the Rangers, serving primarily in player development with one season (2009) as the team's eastern crosschecker. Crook will be in his 11th season with the Rangers, the last five of which have been in a role supporting the scouting staff and leading preparation for the June draft. Medici is a native of Albany, New York and has spent the past four seasons covering Illinois and Indiana for the Toronto Blue Jays. He was a catcher at the University of Buffalo before a stint as a coach at the collegiate level. Klotsche will be in his seventh season with the Rangers, and has served as Manager, Baseball Operations the last two years after stints as an assistant in pro scouting and baseball operations.
ADRIAN BELTRE NAMED 2013 TEXAS RANGERS PLAYER OF THE YEAR
Third baseman Adrian Beltre has been selected as the 2013 Texas Rangers Player of the Year in voting conducted by the Dallas-Fort Worth Chapter of the Baseball Writers Association of America.
It is the second consecutive year that Beltre has been so honored, the first Ranger to capture back-to-back Player of the Year Awards since Michael Young in 2004-05. Beltre batted .315 with 30 homers and 92 RBI in 161 games for Texas in 2013. He topped the American League with 199 hits and ranked among the league leaders in multi-hit games (T2nd, 58), games (3rd), batting average (4th), total bases (5th, 321), slugging (8th, .509), and home runs (T8th).
Beltre will receive his award at the 2014 Dr Pepper Texas Rangers Awards Dinner on Friday, January 24 at the Gaylord Texan Resort and Convention Center in Grapevine. WINTER LEAGUE UPDATES: In the Arizona Fall League, the Surprise Saguaros shut out Mesa, 2-0, on Saturday to claim the 2013 Arizona Fall League Championship...C Jorge Alfaro went 1-for-3 with a RBI in the contest…RHP Keone Kela protected a 1-0 lead with a scoreless 8th inning….Alfaro finished the season ranked among the AFL leaders in batting (2nd, .386), runs (T5th, 18), and doubles (T7th, 6)…Alfaro also threw out 2 attempted basestealers in the championship game and 7 of 14 (50%) in the regular season…Kela allowed just one unearned run in his 7 appearances for the Saguaros this fall, fanning 10 batters over 8.2 innings of work and recording a pair of saves…INF Ryan Rua did not appear in the championship game, but batted .250 (8-32) with 4 home runs and 13 RBI over his final 8 games with the Saguaros…INF Brett Nicholas, RHP Lisalverto Bonilla, RHP Ryan Harvey, LHP Will Lamb, RHP Nick McBride, and RHP Matt West also appeared for the Saguaros during the regular season…in the Dominican Winter League, LHP Robbie Ross made his 4th start for Este on Friday night vs. Cibao (5.0 IP, 4 H, 1 R-ER, 1 BB, 7 SO)...Ross has posted a 1.38 ERA (2 ER/13.0 IP) with 11 strikeouts against 3 walks over his last 3 starts for the Toros…INF Jurickson Profar has batted .284 (25-88) with 5 doubles, a triple, home run, 5 RBI, and 20 runs scored in 25 games with Licey…Profar has recorded 24 walks against just 10 strikeouts…in the Venezuelan Winter League, SS Luis Sardinas (La Guaira) is batting .378 (14-37) over his last 10 games to raise his season average to .354, 6th-highest in the VWL…RHP Wilmer Font has compiled a 2.84 ERA (2 ER/6.1 IP) over 7 relief appearances with Caracas.
