Major League Baseball announced today that Rangers right-handed pitcher Justin Grimm has been selected the American League Rookie of the Month for April. The award was announced this afternoon by Major League Baseball after voting by the league writers and broadcasters.
Grimm, 24, is scheduled to make his fourth start of the season tonight against Chicago-AL. He went 2-0 with a 1.59 ERA (3 ER/17.0 IP) over his 3 starts in April. He has the lowest ERA among A.L. rookie qualifiers and his 2 wins are tied for most among league rookies. Opponents have batted just .239 (16-67), the second-lowest figure among A.L. rookies.
In his last start on Friday at Minnesota, Grimm became just the second rookie in Rangers history with a scoreless start of 7.0-or-more innings while allowing no walks and 5-hits-or-less (also Matt Harrison on Aug. 16, 2008 vs. Tampa Bay).
Grimm is just the fourth Ranger to win the A.L.'s monthly rookie award since it was first instituted in 2003, joining Gerald Laird (April 2004), Neftali Feliz (September 2010), and Yu Darvish (April 2012). This is the second straight April for a Texas rookie pitcher to win April honors
