Rangers claim Whiteside, sign Snyder
By T.R. Sullivan / MLB.com
ARLINGTON -- The Rangers have acquired another catcher, picking up the well-traveled Eli Whiteside from the Blue Jays on Wednesday. They also signed infielder Brandon Snyder to a Minor League contract with an invitation to Spring Training.
Whiteside was in the Giants organization last season and this is the third time he has been claimed on waivers this offseason. The Blue Jays claimed him from the Yankees and the Yankees claimed him from the Giants. The Yankees signed him to a one-year contract on Nov. 26 to avoid arbitration and then designated him for assignment on Dec. 3.
Whiteside, 33, was a sixth-round pick of the Orioles in 2001 out of Delta State (Miss.) University. He played briefly for the Orioles in 2005 and then with the Giants for the past four years.
He spent most of this past season at Triple-A Fresno, where he hit .221 with one home run and 20 RBIs. He was 1-for-11 in 12 games with the Giants. He has played in 208 Major League games with a career average of .215 with 10 home runs and 43 RBIs in 489 at-bats. He has a career .273 on-base percentage and a .335 slugging percentage.
He joins Geovany Soto, Konrad Schmidt and Luis Martinez in giving the Rangers four catchers on their 40-man roster. The Rangers now have a full 40-man roster.
Snyder played in 40 games for the Rangers and was 18-for-65 (.277) with three home runs and nine RBIs. He started the season on the Rangers' Opening Day roster and was optioned to Triple-A on Aug. 1. He was recalled in September and then became a free agent at the non-tender deadline. He played third, first, left and right field for the Rangers and also caught one inning behind the plate.
