Joey Gallo selected as the Topps/Minor League Player of the Year in the Arizona League

Arlington, Texas – 3B Joey Gallo was announced as the 2012 Topps/Minor League Baseball Player of the Year in the Arizona League by Minor League Baseball on Monday.
Gallo, who turns 19 on November 19, was a unanimous selection as the Arizona League’s Most Valuable Player in his first professional season, as he set the league home run record with 18 long balls in 150 at-bats over 43 games. The third baseman batted .293 (44-150) with 10 doubles, a triple, 18 home runs, and 43 RBI in 43 games with the AZL Rangers, leading the Arizona League in SLG (.733) and RBI, while ranking among the league leaders in total bases (2nd, 110), walks (T2nd, 37) and runs (3rd, 44) despite missing the final two weeks of the season following a promotion to Spokane. Overall, Gallo combined to bat .272 (56-206) with 22 home runs and 52 RBI in 59 games between the AZL Rangers and Spokane following his selection in the supplemental first round (39th overall) of the 2012 June draft.

Dominican Winter League
OF Engel Beltre has hit safely in 8 of his first 10 games with a plate appearance for Licey, compiling a .400 average (12-30) with a double, 3 triples, and 6 RBI…OF Leonys Martin has been successful on 4 of 5 stolen base attempts through 13 games, ranking 4th in the DWL…3B Mike Olt is batting .286 (8-28) with 4 doubles, a home run, and 5 RBI in 10 games with Licey and his 9 walks are tied for 2nd-most in the circuit…LHP Chad Bell allowed just one unearned run on 3 hits, while recording 4 strikeouts in his last start for Licey on November 1.
Venezuelan Winter League
RHP Wilfredo Boscan has worked 17.2 scoreless innings with 13 strikeouts over his first 4 starts for Zulia, holding opponents to a .161 average (10-31).
