ARLINGTON -- The New York Yankees acquired right-handed relief pitcher Cody Eppley off waivers, Rangers officials confirmed Thursday.
The Rangers designated Eppley for assignment on Wednesday to make room on their 40-man roster. Texas needed to add infielder Alberto Gonzalez and pitcher Robbie Ross to the Opening Day roster.
Eppley, 26, was a 43rd-round pick by the Rangers in the 2008 First-Year Player Draft out of Virginia Commonwealth. He was the Rangers' Minor League Relief Pitcher of the Year in 2008 when he went 5-2 with a 2.08 ERA and 16 saves.
He was 1-1 with an 8.00 ERA in 10 games for the Rangers last season, spending the rest of the year with Triple-A Round Rock. He was 4-2 with a 3.90 ERA and 10 saves in 42 games for Round Rock. His Triple-A ERA was 0.89 as late as June 18 and he was named a Pacific Coast League All-Star.
