Callups to boost Texas' pitching, bench
McCarthy, Guardado, German among those to join Rangers

MINNEAPOLIS -- Starter Brandon McCarthy, reliever Eddie Guardado and infielder Esteban German will be among those who are added by the Rangers on Tuesday when rosters are expanded to up to 40 players. The Rangers aren't going to call up everybody on their 40-man roster, but they do want to add a few pitchers and reinforce their bench for the stretch run. "We certainly want to make sure we are covered pitching-wise and make sure we cover ourselves behind the plate," manager Ron Washington said. "We've got six outfielders, but I'd like to have another infielder." Washington said that will be German, who is on the disabled list with a mild hamstring injury, but is eligible to be activated on Tuesday. Texas also might add another speed/pinch-runner guy for the bench, and that might be Greg Golson. He has 18 steals at Triple-A Oklahoma. Guardado has been on the disabled list with inflammation in his left knee and hasn't pitched since Aug. 14. But he has been with the Rangers on this road trip, throwing in the bullpen and live batting practice, and said he is ready to go. "I can tell a tremendous difference," Guardado said Sunday. "As a player, you push yourself to the limit -- we all do -- but sometimes you have to take a step back. You want to be ready every day, and you're going to have aches and pains. But until they put me on the disabled list, I didn't realize I didn't have any legs. Now my legs are under me again." Other pitchers who are likely to be called up include Guillermo Moscoso and Willie Eyre. Warner Madrigal is another possibility. The Rangers also want a third catcher. Jarrod Saltalamacchia is the obvious guy. He is on the disabled list because of pain and numbness in his right arm, but is eligible to come off on Tuesday. If Saltalamacchia's not ready, Texas will likely bring up Kevin Richardson. The Rangers will also add McCarthy to the roster. He is on the 60-day disabled list because of a stress fracture in his right shoulder blade, but is expected to be activated on Tuesday and pitch in the doubleheader against the Blue Jays.
