Outfielder hits long ball behind Benson as Texas falls to KC

at Arlington, Texas
Saturday, April 4

Rangers at the plate: Marlon Byrd, making a bid to be the Opening Day left fielder on Monday, hit a two-run home run in his final spring at-bat. He hit .339 for the spring. Steve Murphy, part of the Double-A contingent providing support on the weekend, hit a two-run double.

Royals at the plate: Coco Crisp, acquired from the Red Sox in the offseason, finished a tremendous spring with two hits in three at-bats. That left him with a .395 batting average and a .489 on-base percentage. Mike Jacobs hit his seventh home run of the spring, and infielder Alberto Callapso had three hits, including an eighth inning triple that drove in Ryan Shealy and provided the margin of victory.

Rangers on the mound: Kris Benson made his final start of the spring and allowed three runs -- one earned -- in five innings. He allowed eight hits but struck out five. Eddie Guardado pitched a scoreless inning and is unscored upon in three of his past four outings.

Royals on the mound: Kyle Davies pitched four innings and allowed two runs on four hits and a walk while striking out two. He had a 3.82 ERA for the spring. His next start will be Thursday against the White Sox. Ron Mahay looked pretty sharp in his third outing since a three-week layoff because of a heel injury. He pitched a scoreless fifth. Closer Joakim Soria pitched a scoreless ninth inning, striking out a batter, to earn the save, his second of Spring Training.

Cactus League records: Rangers 21-14; Royals 18-14.

Up next: Opening Day is Monday for both teams. Kevin Millwood and the Rangers face the Indians at 1:05 p.m. CT Monday at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington. The Royals, with Gil Meche on the mound, face the White Sox at 1:05 p.m. Monday at U.S. Cellular Field in Chicago.
