Tracy's slam helps Rangers corral Rox

Rookie puts club ahead with first spring homer; Millwood tosses six frames

at Surprise, Ariz.
Saturday, March 21

Rangers at the plate: Chad Tracy broke a 4-4 stalemate with a grand slam -- and his first spring homer -- in the bottom of the seventh inning. Jarrod Saltalamacchia had a pair of doubles. He now has six on the spring. Travis Metcalf had an RBI double and scored a run. The Rangers had seven doubles in the game.

Rockies at the plate: Matt Murton, getting a chance to be the designated hitter, hit a home run in the sixth inning, his second of the spring. Catcher Paul Phillips hit his first home run in the third inning, and Joe Koshanksky drilled his second home run in the seventh.

Rangers on the mound: Kevin Millwood became the first Rangers pitcher to go six innings this spring while allowing three runs on five hits, including two home runs. Millwood walked one and struck out five.

Rockies on the mound: Jorge De La Rosa, trying to win a spot in the rotation, allowed three runs on six hits in four innings of work. The impressive part was that he did not walk a batter and struck out five. One run in the second inning was set up when a high popup fell between shortstop Omar Quintinalla and left fielder Seth Smith.

Cactus League records: Rangers 14-9; Rockies 8-12-1

Up next: Luis Mendoza, who has been dealing with a blister over the past week, will start for the Rangers against the Dodgers at 3:05 p.m. CT on Sunday in Glendale, Ariz. Scott Feldman will do his pitching in a Minor League game. The Rangers want to stretch out some of their middle relievers, so Warner Madrigal, Josh Rupe and possibly Frank Francisco will pitch two innings.
