Rangers have plenty to accomplish

Texas (25-25) at Cleveland (22-26), Saturday, 6:05 p.m. CT

CLEVELAND -- The Rangers have a doubleheader scheduled for Saturday at Progressive Field. The Indians are invited only to the second game.

Scott Feldman will be on the mound when the Rangers face the Indians on Saturday night. But Kevin Millwood will also be pitching in a simulated game Saturday afternoon that could go a long way to see when he'll be able to return to the rotation.

Millwood has been on the disabled list with a strained right groin since his last start on May 10 against the Athletics. The problem seems to have cleared up, but Millwood hasn't fully tested it.

The Rangers want him to be able to throw 60-75 pitches without a problem before they activate him. Saturday's simulated game will determine if he can return to the Rangers' rotation on Friday against the Athletics or if he'll need to go on a medical rehabilitation assignment.

"All we can do is see how things go [Saturday], then sit down, put our heads together and see what's best," Rangers manager Ron Washington said. "We'll watch him closely [Saturday] and decide where he goes from there."

Pitching matchup
TEX: RHP Scott Feldman (1-1, 4.10 ERA)
Feldman is 1-1 with a 3.45 ERA in five starts. He has pitched at least six innings in all five starts, and the first four were quality starts. That streak was broken when he gave up five runs in six innings in his last start against the Twins on Monday. He now has a 5.84 ERA in his two starts on the road as opposed to a 3.24 ERA at home. He has made five career relief appearances against the Indians, and has a 1.42 ERA against them.

CLE: LHP Cliff Lee (6-1, 1.37 ERA)
Lee has the lowest ERA in the American League and has struck out 46 batters while walking just five. Opponents are hitting .202 off him. He has walked 0.8 batters per nine innings, the lowest ratio in the league. He is 2-0 with a 1.57 ERA in his three starts at Progressive Field. He is 3-2 with a 6.52 ERA in five career starts against the Rangers, his second highest ERA against any American League team.

The Rangers have released pitcher John Patterson, who has a sore arm and won't be able to pitch this season. ... Milton Bradley started in the outfield for the eighth time on Friday and may do so again on Saturday. ... Rangers vice president for business operations, Rick McLaughlin, is leaving the club to be chief operating officer for the Dallas Stars. Eventualy he'll run the Minor League hockey expansion team being started up by Hicks Holdings in Austin.
