McCarthy solid in four-inning stint

Vazquez hits two-run homer in 10th inning for winning runs

Rangers at the plate: Ian Kinsler tied the game with a homer to leadoff the fourth. Victor Diaz tied it again in the seventh, hitting an RBI double and scoring on a Jerry Hairston single, and Hairston scored the go-ahead run for a 4-3 lead when Marlon Byrd knocked a single to cap the three-run inning. Ramon Vazquez hit a two-run homer in the 10th.

Padres at the plate: Jose Cruz Jr. got the Padres started with a home run to open the first, his second of the spring. Adrian Gonzalez followed with his second round-tripper to lead off the fourth, reclaiming the lead for the Padres. Khalil Greene made it three leadoff blasts when he drilled a sixth-inning shot over the left-field fence.

Rangers on the mound: Starter Brandon McCarthy lasted four innings, yielding two runs on five hits and two walks. He gave up a pair of solo homers. Bruce Chen followed with 3 2/3 innings of four-hit ball, his only earned run coming on another solo shot.

Padres on the mound: Jake Peavy had a strong outing, going five innings and allowing just two hits, the solo shot from Kinsler representing the only damage against him. Peavy struck out six while walking one. Trevor Hoffman struggled, pitching 2/3 innings and giving up three runs on four hits and a walk.

Cactus League records: Rangers 8-5; Padres 5-8.

Up next: The Rangers make their second trip to Tucson Thursday, sending Robinson Tejeda to the hill to take on right-hander Edgar Gonzalez and the Diamondbacks. The Padres have an off-day Thursday, and return Friday for a rematch with the Rangers. Clay Hensley makes the start against Jamey Wright for Texas.
