The Texas Rangers announced today that the club has acquired right-handed pitcher Tim Wood from Pittsburgh on a trade waiver claim in exchange for a player to be named later or cash considerations. Wood has been added to the Rangers' 40-man roster and optioned to Triple-A Round Rock.

Wood, 28, has made 13 appearances for Pittsburgh this season, going 0-3 with a 5.63 ERA (5 ER/8.0 IP). He was designated for assignment by the Pirates on Friday in order to reinstate Ross Ohlendorf from the 60-day disabled list. The Pirates signed Wood to a minor league contract on March 31 after he was released by Washington. His lone stint in the big leagues this year was June 10-July 1. He spent the rest of the season with Triple-A Indianapolis, going 2-0 with league-leading 23 saves and a 2.84 ERA (14 ER/44.1 IP) in 40 relief appearances. Wood was 23-for-26 in save chances in the International League, holding opponents to a .196 (32-163) average with just one home run, 12 walks and 32 strikeouts. He has a 0.992 WHIP figure at Triple-A in 2011.

Originally selected by Florida in the 44th round of the 2002 June draft, Wood has gone 1-4 with a 4.50 ERA (29 ER/58.0 IP) over 57 career relief appearances in the big leagues with the Marlins (2009-10) and Pirates (2011). Although he began his career as a starter, Wood has pitched almost exclusively in relief since the start of the 2007 campaign.

With this move, the Rangers now have a full 40-man roster.
