Rangers acquire RHP Mike Adams from San Diego in exchange for Minor League pitchers Robbie Erlin and Joe Wieland
Toronto, Ont. – The Texas Rangers announced this afternoon that the club has acquired right-handed pitcher Mike Adams from San Diego in exchange for minor league pitchers Robbie Erlin and Joe Wieland. Adams goes on the Rangers 40-man roster, and will be added to the 25-man roster when he reports to the club.
Adams, who turned 33 on Friday, has gone 3-1 with a 1.13 ERA (6 ER/48.0 IP) over 48 relief appearances with the Padres this season, recording 49 strikeouts against 9 walks. He has recorded one save with 23 holds and finished 5 games. Opponents have batted just .155 with a .197 on-base percentage and a .256 slugging mark against Adams this season. Right-handers have just a .107 (8-75) average against him in 2011.
The 6-foot-5 Adams' 1.13 ERA ranks as the 3rd-lowest among major league relievers (minimum 0.3 IP/Team G) and is 2nd-lowest in the National League. His .197 opponents on-base figure is the 3rd-lowest in the majors behind only San Francisco's Sergio Romo (.183) and new Ranger Koji Uehara (.191). He has a 5.44 strikeout-to-walk ratio that ranks 5th in the N.L. and 8th in the majors. Adams' 23 holds rank 3rd in the majors behind only Washington's Tyler Clippard (26) and Boston's Daniel Bard (24).
Over the last three seasons beginning in 2009, Adams has gone 7-2 with 76 holds and a 1.31 ERA (22 ER/151.2 IP) in 155 relief appearances with San Diego, holding opponents to a .163 average with a .221 on-base percentage. The ERA, holds, opponents average, and opponents on-base figures are all the lowest in the majors in that span (minimum 120.0 IP).
A native of Sinton, Texas, near Corpus Christi, Adams still lives in that area and played baseball and basketball at Texas A&M-Kingsville. Originally drafted by Milwaukee, Adams has also pitched in the New York Mets and Cleveland organizations, and was acquired by San Diego from Cleveland in exchange for former Ranger Brian Sikorski on July 18, 2006.
Erlin, promoted to Double-A in late May, has combined to go 8-4 with a 3.34 ERA (45 ER/121.1 IP) over 20 games/19 starts with High-A Myrtle Beach and Double-A Frisco this season. He was originally selected by Texas in the third round of the 2009 June draft.
Wieland has combined to go 10-3 with a 1.80 ERA (26 ER/129.2 IP) in 21 games/20 starts for High-A Myrtle Beach and Double-A Frisco in 2011. He was promoted to Frisco in late June. Wieland was originally selected by Texas in the fourth round of the 2008 June draft.
With these moves, the Rangers now have a full 40-man roster.
