The Texas Rangers today announced that the club has signed free right-handed pitcher Manny Delcarmen to a minor league contact and assigned him to Triple-A Round Rock of the Pacific Coast League.

Delcarmen, 29, went 2-2 with a 5.14 ERA (16 ER/28.0 IP) in 18 games for Triple-A Tacoma in the Seattle organization this season. The right-hander asked for and was granted his unconditional release on May 31, utilizing a clause in the minor league contract he signed with Mariners on February 14.

A second round selection by Boston in the 2000 June Draft, Delcarmen went 11-6 with a 3.89 ERA (123 ER/284.1 IP) and 3 saves over 289 relief appearances with the Red Sox from 2005-10. The Boston native logged 55-or-more appearances at the major league level each of the previous 3 seasons, including a career-high 73 in 2008, 4th-most by a right-hander in the American League during that campaign. Delcarmen has made 11 postseason appearances in his career, including 6 during the Red Sox' World Series run in 2007.

Boston traded the right-hander to Colorado along with cash, in exchange for RHP Chris Balcom-Miller on August 31, 2010 and Delcarmen went 0-2 with a 6.48 ERA (6 ER/8.1 IP) over 9 appearances with the Rockies last September. Delcarmen has combined to go 11-8 with a 3.97 ERA (129 ER/292.2 IP) and 3 saves over parts of 6 big league seasons.

HUNTER TO PITCH SATURDAY: RHP Tommy Hunter is scheduled to resume an injury rehabilitation assignment with Round Rock (AAA) on Saturday versus Albuquerque. It will be his first rehab outing since a game with Round Rock on May 9 vs. Nashville (W, 6.0 IP, 1 R-0 ER), when he aggravated his original injury (right groin strain) on his final pitch of the day. Hunter opened the season on the Rangers disabled list with the groin injury and had made 2 rehab starts, one with Frisco (AA) and one with Round Rock, going 1-0 with a 1.80 ERA (2 ER/10.0 IP).

TOBIN SURGERY DETAILS: RHP Mason Tobin, who was placed on the disabled list April 20, underwent successful right elbow surgery yesterday with Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, Ala. Andrews performed "Tommy John" ligament transplant surgery and a UCL reconstruction on the elbow. Tobin is expected to still be doing rehabilitation from the surgery at the start of next season.
