The Texas Rangers today announced that the club has acquired righthanded pitcher Edwar Ramirez from the New York Yankees for cash considerations.

Ramirez has been added to the team's major league roster, putting that at the 40-man limit. He will wear #23.

The righthander, who turns 29 on March 28, was designated for assignment by New York on February 28. He had no record and a 5.73 ERA (14 ER/22.0 IP) with 22 strikeouts in 20 relief appearances over two stints (opening day-May 19; Sept. 1-end of season) with the Yankees in 2009. Ramirez spent the rest of the season at Scranton/Wilkes Barre (AAA), going 1-5, 3.19 in 29 games.

Ramirez was a mainstay of the Yankees bullpen in 2008, going 5-1, 3.55 with 63 strikeouts in 55.1 innings over 55 appearances. He held the opposition to a .215 batting average with right-handers hitting just .195, and his 10.25 strikeouts per 9 innings were seventh best among A.L. relievers. Ramirez is 6-2, 5.22 with two saves and 116 strikeouts in 98.1 innings over 96 appearances in his major league career with the Yankees from 2007-09.

Originally signed by the Los Angeles Angels as an undrafted free agent in February 2001, Ramirez joined the New York organization as a minor league free agent in July 2006.
