ARLINGTON, TEXAS -- The Texas Rangers announced tonight that the club has signed free agent outfielder Endy Chavez to a Minor League contract with an invitation to Major League Spring Training.

Chavez, 32, played 54 games with Seattle last season before suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his right knee in a collision on June 19 vs. Arizona. He had surgery to repair the tear in early July and is not expected to be fully healthy for the start of the season. He batted .273 with 2 home runs, 13 RBIs and 17 runs scored for the Mariners last season, making 44 starts in the outfield. He was 9-for-10 in stolen base attempts.

The Venezuelan native has seen extended action in all three outfield spots during his Major League career with Kansas City (2001), Montreal (2002-04), Washington (2005), Philadelphia (2005), New York-NL (2006-08) and Seattle (2009). He played in 10 postseason games for the Mets in 2006, including every contest in New York's seven-game series loss to St. Louis in the National League Championship Series.

With the addition of Chavez, the Rangers now have 15 non-roster players for this year's Spring Training. The club is slated to have 57 total players in camp, with a full 40-man roster plus Omar Beltre and Alexi Ogando, both of whom are on the 40-man roster restricted list.
