United Concordia, Davis Vision, Texas Rangers and Mission Arlington/Mission Metroplex join forces to offer free dental, vision services this Saturday
DALLAS -- This Saturday, August 23, United Concordia, EyeMasters, Texas Rangers and Mission Arlington/Mission Metroplex will join forces to promote healthy smiles and vision for Arlington children and teenagers. Beginning at 9 a.m. and continuing until 1 p.m., a free clinic will offer dental screenings, restorations and sealants for those in need. In addition, a vision clinic will provide free vision screenings and prescription eyeglasses for children and teenagers. Texas Rangers players and mascot will be on-site to talk to the kids and sign autographs.
For far too long, oral health has received much less attention in American culture than other aspects of health care. The perception that one's oral and overall health are separate from general health is shared by many citizens. Fortunately, that perception is beginning to change.
"Oral disease is a growing epidemic in the United States," says Harlon L. Robinson, United Concordia corporate vice president of Human Resources and Administration and Corporate Diversity chairman. "As recognition of oral health increases, so must community involvement to improve oral health care. Dental decay can cause pain, loss of time from work and lower self-esteem. Our goal is to make sure everyone has the opportunity to see a dentist so they can achieve optimal oral health no matter where they live. We also teach them healthy dental habits that they can carry with them through their lives."
"Taking care of one's eyesight is important, and the examinations that we will provide on next Saturday will determine if some of the students need additional eyecare or vision correction," said Joseph Wende, O.D., Davis Vision senior vice president of Professional Affairs and Quality Management. "By evaluating the vision and eye health of these children, we can initiate care for those in need immediately, helping to correct or prevent conditions that might negatively affect their vision, general health or educational abilities."
Healthy snacks will be provided, and teens who visit the dentist will receive education on proper dental techniques and oral health care from a hygienist. United Concordia network dentists and their staff, as well as EyeMasters staff, will volunteer their time to bring this community service to Arlington students.
The free clinic will be held Saturday, August 23 at Mission Arlington/Mission Metroplex from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. Students who have not seen a dentist in the last year, those who have minimal or no insurance, or those whose parents have difficulty affording dental or vision care are invited to attend. Dental and vision exams will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis.
