BALTIMORE -- The Texas Rangers announced this afternoon that the club has placed right-handed pitcher Joaquin Benoit on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to July 3, with right shoulder inflammation. To take Benoit's place on the roster, the club has purchased the contract of right-handed pitcher Dustin Nippert (#57) from Triple-A Oklahoma. Nippert will be in uniform and available for tonight's game in Baltimore.
Benoit has made just eight appearances since the beginning of June. He has gone 3-2 with a 5.60 ERA (22 ER/35.1 IP) in 34 relief appearances for the Rangers this season. He has 28 walks against 28 strikeouts in 2008.
Nippert will be in his second stint with the club this season. He was a member of the club's Opening Day roster after being acquired in a spring training trade with Arizona on March 28. He has allowed 17 runs (16 earned) in 8.2 innings over six relief appearances with Texas this season, posting a 1-2 record. His last big league outing was April 21 at Boston, allowing eight runs in 2.1 innings in the Rangers' 8-3 defeat.
Nippert was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a sore right foot on April 22. After a rehab assignment, he cleared waivers and was assigned to Triple-A Oklahoma. Nippert has gone 6-2 with a 3.98 ERA (28 ER/63.1 IP) in 12 games/10 starts for Oklahoma. He tossed a complete-game seven-inning no-hitter in his last appearance for the RedHawks on June 29 at Omaha (G1), issuing two walks with five strikeouts.
With these moves, the Rangers now have 39 players on the club's 40-man roster.
