ARLINGTON -- The Texas Rangers announced today that right-handed pitcher Sidney Ponson has been placed on waivers for the purpose of giving him his unconditional release. Additionally, the club has reinstated right-handed pitcher Thomas Diamond from the 60-day disabled list and optioned him to Double-A Frisco.
Ponson was designated for assignment on June 6. He went 4-1 with a 3.88 ERA (24 ER/55.2 IP) in 9 games/starts for the Rangers this season. Ponson was originally signed to a minor league contract with an invitation to major league spring training on March 9.
Diamond was placed on the major league 60-day disabled list on April 17, when infielder German Duran had his contract purchased from Triple-A Oklahoma. He has already made 5 rehab starts with Frisco, going 1-1 with a 6.23 ERA (15 ER/21.2 IP) in those outings, holding opposition to a .228 average. He has a 4.76 ERA (9 ER/17.0 IP) in his last 4 starts in the Texas League.
With these moves, the Rangers still have 37 players on the club's 40-man roster.
