Nady joins prospects at Padres' big league camp
Boyer, Gonzalez, Hedges, Wisler among 18 non-roster invitees to Spring Training
The Padres have invited 18 non-roster players to Major League Spring Training. The list includes eight right-handed pitchers, two catchers, five infielders and three outfielders.
Right-hander Blaine Boyer and infielders Alberto Gonzalez and Xavier Nady are the only three with big league experience. Thirteen of the 18 were either drafted by the Padres or were signed by the club as non-drafted free agents.
The full list is: right-handers Boyer, Leonel Campos, Anthony Carter, Dennis O'Grady, Adys Portillo, Kevin Quackenbush, Joe Ross and Matt Wisler; catchers Cody Decker and Austin Hedges; outfielders Alex Dickerson, Rico Noel and Daniel Robertson; and infielders Jonathan Galvez, Gonzalez, Nady, Cory Spangenberg and Jace Peterson.
Both Hedges and Wisler are considered among the Padres' top prospects, and Hedges will be making his second appearance in big league camp while Wisler will make his first.
Hedges, San Diego's second-round pick in the 2011 MLB Draft, hit. 260 with 25 doubles and 38 RBIs in 86 games between Class A Advanced Lake Elsinore and Double-A San Antonio last season. Wisler, a seventh-round selection in that same Draft, went 10-6 last year between Class A Advanced and Double-A.
Nady, 35, last appeared in the Majors in 2012, when he split time between the Nationals and Giants, batting .184 in 59 games. Gonzalez, 30, appeared in 24 games with the Cubs and Yankees last season, hitting .193, while Boyer, 32, has made 233 relief appearances over a seven-year career with four clubs.
Pitchers and catchers will report to camp Feb. 13, and position players will report Feb. 18.
