Rangers sign Relaford to Minors deal
Veteran infielder will seek spot among Hairston Jr. and others
ARLINGTON -- The Rangers have signed veteran Major League infielder Desi Relaford to a Minor League contract with an invitation to Spring Training.Delaford will compete with Jerry Hairston Jr., Drew Meyers and Joaquin Arias for a spot as a utility infielder. Relaford has spent parts of 10 seasons in the Majors with Philadelphia, San Diego, the New York Mets, Seattle, Kansas City and Colorado. He most recently played in the big leagues with Colorado in 2005, where he hit .224 with 16 RBIs in 73 games for the Rockies. He appeared in 11 games for Triple-A Memphis in the St. Louis organization in 2006, batting .121 with three RBIs for the Redbirds in April and May. General manager Jon Daniels also announced the Rangers have invited Minor League righty Jose Vargas to Major League camp. Vargas has spent the last two seasons in the Mexican League. He made his pro debut in the Cleveland organization in 1998 and reached Triple-A in 2003 with Buffalo. He was signed as a Minor League free agent by the Rangers on Sept. 6, 2006.
