MLBeat: Irabu in hospital, on DL
By Alan Eskew / MLB.com
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Rangers closer
Hideki Irabu was placed on the disabled list Monday with pulmonary emboli, which is a series of small blood clots that have traveled to the arteries of his lungs.
A club spokesman said Irabu woke up in the middle of the night with shortness of breath and complaining of chest pain. He checked into St. Luke's Hospital
in Kansas City at about 4 a.m., where the blood clots were found. He will remain hospitalized for two to three days before returning to Texas.
Irabu is being given medication and blood thinners.
"I saw him at 6 in the morning and he looked great and his spirits were good," Rangers manager Jerry Narron said. "Ray Ramirez (assistant trainer) took him to the hospital. They ran tests and that (blood clotting) is what they found.
"I know he'll be on some type of blood thinner for awhile. I don't know when he'll be able to pitch again. It is serious. With the death of (Cardinals pitcher) Darryl Kile, I don't think anybody is going to do anything
(until) he is healthy. Baseball is secondary."
Irabu, who was 3-8 with a 5.74 earned run average, led the Rangers with 16 saves. With Irabu out and
Jeff Zimmerman and
John Rocker on the disabled list, the Rangers are without a closer. Zimmerman, who had elbow surgery, is rehabbing in the minors with
Double-A Tulsa, where he was scheduled to make his fourth appearance
"He is way to valuable to rush back," Narron said of Zimmerman.
He said he would "just try to mix and match" with the closer's role. "(Jay) Powell has more experience than anybody," Narron said. Powell has 22 big league saves.
A-Rod honored: Shortstop
Alex Rodriguez, who hit four home runs in four games after the All-Star break, was
named the American League Player of the Week. Rodriguez batted .375
(6-for-16) with five runs, seven RBIs and a 1.188 slugging percentage in the
four-game series at Minnesota. On Sunday, he recorded his fifth multi-homer game
of the season en route to becoming the first shortstop in history to post six
seasons of 30 homers or more. It's the seventh time Rodriguez has won the honor.Greer back on DL: The Rangers made three other roster moves Monday. They put outfielder
Rusty Greer back on the disabled list with injuries to his back, elbow and hip. Greer came off the disabled list after the All-Star break, but had only one at-bat. He was scratched from the lineup Saturday in
Minnesota and returned Monday to Texas to be evaluated. Greer may be facing elbow surgery to remove chips. He missed five weeks with a hyperextended back.
Pitchers added: The Rangers called up pitchers
Joaquin Benoit and
Rob Bell from the minors to start the doubleheader Monday at Kansas City.
Sadler clears waivers: In another move, the
Rangers announced utility player
Donnie Sadler cleared waivers and has been offered an outright assignment to
Triple-A Oklahoma. He has 72 hours to make a decision on whether to accept the
assignment.
Kolb transferred: The club also transferred right-hander
Danny Kolb from Tulsa to Oklahoma on his rehab assignment. Kolb has been on the disabled list all year with a partial rotator cuff tear.
Fantasy Edge: With Hideki Irabu on the
disabled list, look for the Rangers to give
Jay Powell some save opportunities.
