Rangers find talent with fewer picks
Forty-six players chosen in all, including 22 pitchers
By Jesse Sanchez / MLB.com

Texas Rangers round-by-round picks

ARLINGTON, Texas -- The First-Year Player Draft has come and gone and despite not having picks in rounds two through five, the Rangers still came away with 46 players.

On Wednesday, the club selected 28 players on the second and final day of the draft. The team picked 14 pitchers, seven outfielders, four infielders, and three catchers on Wednesday.

Overall, Texas selected 22 pitchers, 10 infielders, nine outfielders, and five catchers. Of the 46 selections, 28 players were from four-year universities and junior colleges with 18 being drafted out of high school.

Among the selections was right-handed pitcher Andrew Myette in the 41st round from Kwantelen Junior College, B.C., Canada. He is the brother of current Oklahoma pitcher Aaron Myette and this marks the third consecutive year that Texas has drafted Myette.

Myette was selected in the 17th round in 2000 and the 44th round in 2001. The Rangers also went with family ties when they selected East Carolina University left-handed pitcher Sam Narron, the cousin of Rangers Manager Jerry Narron in the 15th round Tuesday.

The Rangers used their first round pick, the tenth overall selection, to draft shortstop Drew Meyer, 20, from the University of South Carolina.

Meyer, who stands at 5-foot-10 and weighs 185 pounds, boasts a .335 average, 24 home runs, 122 RBIs and 69 stolen bases in three seasons with the Gamecocks. He is hitting .379 with six home runs, five triples and 36 RBIs in 66 games for the Gamecocks. He boasts a .543 slugging percentage, .427 on-base percentage and has 36 stolen bases in 49 attempts.

He can play second base, third base and in the outfield.

"I don't know any other way to put it than this guy to me is the most complete-package, college baseball player that was in this draft for us," Fuson said. "To me, it's the instinctual side of this player that really sold me. This is a guy you take a really good look at and you have to see numerous times to appreciate the instincts and the value this guy has."
