SD@PHI: Volquez tosses six innings of one-run ball

The Padres snapped their six-game losing streak with a 7-1 victory against the D-backs on Friday night. On Saturday, in the series' second game, the Padres will turn to right-hander Edinson Volquez to try and win back-to-back games for just the third time this season.

The Diamondbacks will give the ball to right-hander Daniel Hudson, who will be making his fifth start this season and second since being activated from the disabled list last week. Hudson missed about a month this season with a right-shoulder impingement.

The Diamondbacks beat the Brewers 4-3 on May 27 in Hudson's return from the DL. Hudson said he was happy to get back on the mound.

"I got a little tired at the end," Hudson said. "I threw a lot of pitches and I lost command there, but overall I felt pretty good."

Volquez is also coming off a subpar start. He allowed two runs on five hits in 5 2/3 innings and walked three batters. During the game, however, Volquez moved from the first-base side to the third-base side of the rubber on the advice of pitching coach Darren Balsley. Volquez said the switch helped his command.

"I was a little all over the plate in the first two innings, but I talked to our pitching coach about something I was doing in my mechanics," Volquez said.

D-backs: Kubel, Putz back with the team
• The D-backs got reinforcements Friday with the return of outfielder Jason Kubel and reliever J.J. Putz. Neither had been gone long, but the D-backs are happy to see them back.

Kubel had been on the paternity list since his wife went into labor Wednesday. Putz, meanwhile, was unavailable in Thursday's game with neck stiffness.

Neither Kubel or Putz played in the D-backs' loss Friday.

Padres: Grandal called up, could debut this weekend
• The Padres called up catcher Yasmani Grandal on Friday. The 23-year-old is one of the prospects they received in the Mat Latos trade over the winter. Grandal did not play in the Padres' 7-1 victory Friday and manager Bud Black said he likely will help off the bench for now.

"A switch-hitter who has some pop in his bat," Black said. "He gives us an extra bat until [Mark Kotsay] gets back. He'll be able to supplement our bench."

Grandal was hitting .317 with four home runs at Triple-A Tuscon this season.

Worth noting
• Volquez struck out a season-high eight batters on April 10, which was the last time he faced the D-backs.
